The environment, poverty and economic growth in Mexico
The objective is to determine whether the country's economic growth contributes to environmental degradation, and whether parallel to economic activity, the poor also affect it; it seeks to validate the existence of an Environmental Kuznets Curve (CKA-extended) for Mexico during the period 2003-2017. Two regression models, one multiple linear and one cubic polynomial, are estimated using the ordinary least squares method. The results show that, for both, there is a positive relationship between environmental degradation and economic growth, as well as with the poor. It is recommended to consider some of this socioeconomic variable, others as explanatory to the impact on the environment. The limitation of such studies for developing countries such as Mexico is the low availability of environmental statistics and especially expressed in a series of times. Despite this, its originality lies in the variable used to measure the environmental aspect: total costs due to depletion of natural resources and environmental degradation. The existence of a CKA-extended for Mexico is concluded.
